For over 20 years, starting as Directions Plus, we have existed to maintain and improve the quality of life of people and carers. We are affiliated to and accredited by Dial UK, and work in partnership with various other charities across Cambridgeshire.

We give free, confidential and impartial advice on most issues relating to disability via our five-day a week advice line, sessions by appointment at Addenbrookes Hospital, Ely CAB and if necessary, at a place of your choice, such as your home.

About Us

Who we are

Disability Cambridgeshire is an advice and information service for disabled people, older people, their families and carers. We serve people of all ages in South and East Cambridgeshire, Fenland and Cambridge City.

For over 20 years, starting as Directions Plus, we have existed to maintain and improve the quality of life of people and carers. We are affiliated to and accredited by Dial UK, (a network of disability information services) and work in partnership with:

Who we help

  • anyone who lives in our area who has a disability or mental health issue
  • their families and their carers
  • children and young people with learning difficulties
  • older people, their families and their carers
  • families with disabled children or parents
  • people who work with or volunteer to help disabled people, older people and their carers

What we do

We give free, confidential and impartial advice on most issues relating to disability via our five-day a week advice line, sessions by appointment at Addenbrookes Hospital, Ely CAB and if necessary, at a place of your choice, such as your home.

We can help with problems including:

  • direct payments or funding for your care
  • benefit entitlements including what you can and can’t claim
  • Attendance Allowance
  • challenging decisions and appeals to DLA and PIP decisions
  • employment

Our other services

Our level of activity and range of services depends on the funding that we have at the time. Typically we offer:

  • Free support and representation on matters relating to a range of statutory services for disabled people, their families and carers, including community and residential care, education and housing adaptations.
  • Online resources directory of local and national organisations.
  • Together with the Cambridgeshire Alliance for Independent Living and Realife we assist with the development and delivery of services for people using Direct Payments from Cambridge County Council to pay for their personal care.
  • Assessment of access to buildings or services for public, private and voluntary sectors. All surveys are undertaken by and offer a cost-effective way to ensure that buildings and services comply with the Equalities Act (formerly the DDA).
  • Disability Equality Training – training courses for groups and businesses to explain the environmental, employment and discrimination issues faced by disabled people.

Get Involved

As a registered charity we rely on grants, donations and local peoples’ support to keep our services running. You can:

Become a member

It’s free and you will help us to:

  • plan the delivery and development of future services
  • campaign on issues affecting disabled people and their carers – the more disabled people and carers we have as members the louder our voice can be heard locally
  • keep informed of developments affecting you: members receive our newsletter and invitations to our Annual General Meeting and other events.

Volunteer

Our service is provided by a combination of paid staff and volunteers. Almost all of the volunteers are either disabled people or carers. Many of the staff also have first-hand experience of disability or caring.

All staff and volunteers must have Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks (formerlly Criminal Records Bureau, CRB, checks).

To enquire about becoming a volunteer, please call 01480839192 or email volunteer@disability-cambridgeshire.org.uk

Make a donation

Our services are free to users and available to anyone within our area. However we are always in need of donations to support and expand our work.

If we have helped you in the past and you are satisfied with our work please think about making a donation so we can help others.

You can also make payments by organising a standing order or leave us a legacy in your will.
